NASBLA-Approved Boating Safety Course

A NASBLA-approved boater card, also known as a boater education card or safety certificate, indicates that you have completed a boating safety course recognized by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, is required to carry this card along with a photo ID when operating a motorboat with a horsepower of 10 or more. This requirement is similar across many states, reinforcing the importance of having formal boating education for safety on the water.

If you’re planning a trip to Florida and already have a NASBLA-approved boater card from your home state, you’re in luck! Your card is recognized nationwide, including in Florida. However, if you don’t have a boater card and want to rent a vessel while on vacation, you can easily obtain a temporary certificate. By completing a boating safety course and obtaining the necessary certification, you’ll be better prepared for a safe and enjoyable time on Florida’s beautiful waters!

Steps to Get Certified

Take a Course:

Choose either online or in-person to complete an approved boating safety course. BoatTests101.com is a recommended platform for taking the test online.

Pass The Exam:

After finishing the course material, you must pass a knowledge test to prove your understanding of boating safety.

Receive Your Certificate:

Once you pass the exam, you will get a physical or digital boater card. Unlike a driver’s license, these cards do not expire. You’ll also have the option to print or download a temporary certificate, valid for 90 days, while your permanent lifetime card is being processed and mailed to you.
